A real-life drama about why, in the beautiful and quirky rural town of Hebden Bridge, filmmaker Jez Lewis' childhood friends are killing themselves. Beginning with a personal quest for understanding, the film moves into a year-long drama of human tragedy and redemption as principal character Cass comes to terms with his own mortality and attempts to lift himself out of his cycle of self-destruction. This core narrative carves an upward arc through an intimate study of a place often described as paradise, but which harbours an undertow of lethal hedonism and disillusionment. As people continue to kill themselves during the making of the film, a maelstrom of conflicting values throws up unexpected truths about the human condition. |

This outrageous comedy finds a rogues’ gallery of wealthy guests (from business tycoons to heiresses) aboard a hyper-luxury yacht, whose downtrodden staff – under the command of their captain and avowed Marxist (Woody Harrelson) – must respond to their every belittling whim in the hope of winning tips. Among the super-rich patrons are the oh-so-beautiful couple Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), two models and social media influencers who have been invited on a free trip to show off the kind of lavish lifestyle many could only dream of. When the vessel is shipwrecked after a storm, the remaining passengers and crew are left stranded on an island. Here, survival skills become the new currency and hierarchical structures are upended, with the ship’s toilet cleaner Abigail (Dolly De Leon) taking charge over the moneyed elites, who are at a loss without their creature comforts. Fate introduces a little equality among the survivors, with anarchic, shocking, and hilarious results. After winning the Palme d’Or in 2017 for The Square, Östlund entered that rare category of directors to win the prize twice with his latest film. Just as he skewered family values in Force Majeure and the art world in The Square, in his latest effort the filmmaker takes to task the wealthiest of the wealthy, the social media set, and the treatment of those whose service-industry jobs make them invisible, yet when the world is turned upside down become indispensable. Triangle of Sadness is further evidence of Östlund’s brilliant skewering of modern Western society, its values, and everything that those who profit from it hold dear. © © 2022 - Plattform Produktion AB, Film i Väst AB, Sveriges Television AB, Essential Filmproduktion GmbH, Coproduction Office Ltd., Société Parisienne de Production SARL, Coproduction Office ApS, British Broadcasting Corporation, The British Film Institute, Arte France Cinéma |

The stunning debut from Scottish writer-director Charlotte Wells, Aftersun juxtaposes a hopeful coming-of-age story with a poignant, intimate family portrait that leaves an indelible impression. At a fading vacation resort in the late 1990s, 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) treasures rare time together with her loving and idealistic father, Calum (BAFTA winner Paul Mescal, Normal People). As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Twenty years later, Sophie’s tender recollections of their last holiday become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t, in Charlotte Wells’ superb and searingly emotional debut film. Winner of the French Touch Jury Prize at the Cannes 2022 Critics’ Week and the Grand Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival. © © 2023 MUBI |

In the winter of 1939 to 1940, tiny Finland held back the might of the Soviet army which stormed Finlands borders with massive tank and artillery firepower, a large air force and well armed infantry. The war continued relentlessly for 105 days, in extreme conditions, through an exceptionally cold and hostile winter. Against all the odds the Finns held strong and this historic battle has come to be known as the Finnish Miracle. Made in 1989, The Winter War was the first real, bloody, hard-hitter of a WW2 movie. It inspired a new generation of war movie realism by recounting war from the soldiers point of view; exposing their lives, their feelings and the visceral experiences of the front-line. © © 1989 NATIONAL - FILMI OY |
